It has been a couple of months since I first introduced our dumpster-dive find here. They were finished during the madness of finals week/moving/prepping for our Kuwait trip...and obviously, traveling back, adding a family member (see post below), and jumping straight into school/work again...left me little time to update you on their progress. Until now. So here it is!
After the first step here, we worked on the chairs little by little. They took over our living room, our office and our patio...sometimes all at once. I was SO ready for this project to be done so we could clean up the mess(es)!
All in all, they came out great. And we are so happy with them! They are not perfect, but they are pretty cool.
But we also ended up spending a lot more time and money on them than we anticipated. We are chalking it up to the fun of the activity and the many tricks/skills/tools we acquired along the way that can be useful in our future DIY projects!
Once the chairs were finally painted and sprayed (2-3 coats) with poly, Jonny was a champ and made some new wooden seats to replace the old rush ones that were falling apart. He had to borrow different saws, make multiple cuts/measurements and brave wind and rain to get it done.
After multiple trips to the fabric store, (I'm a horrible decision-maker), the fabric, batting and cushions were purchased, and an evening in front of the TV with elmer's glue and a staple gun later, voila! We had chairs.
Though we miss our odd little set (only 3!) vinyl-flowery-mustard-yellow-rolling-swivel chairs, we are thrilled with how are new ones turned out! (They go right along with the 'green-ing' of our new apartment...adding more greens to our color scheme to lighten things up from our deep burgundy/gold/purple/red).
And since the cotton upholstery fabric isn't as wipe-away friendly as our old yellow chairs, we plan on keeping the chairs for a long time and changing out the fabric on the seats when they get stained/when we(I) get sick of the pattern or color. It will be easy to snap on some different fabric with our new handy staple gun.
(Its difficult to get the color just right with our camera in the kitchen, it is actually a not so pale...its a brighter green.)
