Life: A Beautiful Gift

Introducing Jamila Dineo Monareng!
Her name means "beautiful gift". How precious and how true.
My amazing sister's sweet little baby was born this weekend.
How wonderful that Heavenly Father sends these cherished spirits to earth and allows us to take care of them for a short time.

Also, today is my lovely Mom's birthday! Happy Birthday to you dear mother!
I love you and miss you all the time. I hope to be like you one day.

I'm sitting here eating leftover homemade pizza. Yep. Last night I made it for my first time, the crust from scratch. I may or may not have resisted the urge to toss the dough in the air and sing "O Sole Mio" whilst cooking. One thick crust barbecue chicken and one thin crust veggie parmesan. Delish.

I saw the most beautiful sunrise this morning. So inspiring. Sometimes it pays to get up early to walk your dog. And sometimes its better to live in a flat place where the sun just bursts over the horizon. Just sayin.

I feel really good about this new semester. I'm excited to learn new things...and to be starting my last year of school EVER. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel!

The third Hunger Games book is out! I can't seem to make those books last for more than a day or two. Must.Read.Can't.Stop. I see an all-nighter in my near future.

Our dog is crazy. Officially. He downed a whole batch of cookies Monday morning. Surprise and alarm, I called the vet in a panic to find that he would be 'just fiiiiine' given his size and the cocoa involved. He wallowed around for a few hours in a sweet-induced misery and then proceeded to spend the rest of the day (and night) on a hyper sugar-high rampage. That was especially fun during our last night of obedience class during which our final Canine Good Citizen test was to be passed... but we still love him. After all, don't we do the same thing?: Eat something we know will make us sick but eat it anyway just for the pleasure of the taste and wind up licking our chops after way too many servings? And supposedly we (humans) know better.

Ah yes, life is a beautiful gift. Hope you are all enjoying it today. :)

  • Swimming in the backyard
  • Double dutching
We were spoiled all weekend. We crammed in every bit of girly fun we could, and still made time to lounge around and stay up late giggling and talking.
Thanks to beautiful loving, generous, creative, fun sisters who made this annual event the best ever. (this is our 4th year and it is a wonderful tradition.)
Thanks to great friends who made time to stop by amidst our (admittedly) insane schedule of events and eating.

I always have to catch my breath when I walk into my parents house. It is so beautiful. I love that house. But Bakersfield doesn't really feel too much like home anymore. Its familiar, but not comforting. Its my past...it echoes vaguely with memories and dulled images of years gone by. There were more tumbleweeds than I remembered, but I still love the swimming pools and the palm trees and the dry heat.
I cherished this time I had with my family and some friends. I soak them in. I am growing up, I think. I was very contemplative as I took off into the sky after saying goodbye to my mom at our tiny airport. The sun was setting behind the mountains and the sky was a perfect gradient of colors- bloodred to bright orange, rosey pink and a dusty yellow fading into the hazy blue that is the polluted sky of the drought in a California summer.
Life is strange. Things are changing. I was overwhelmed with emotion at both ends of the spectrum. My heart was heavy. Lets just say I'd seen it all. I was ready to close my eyes.

Unfortunately, that didn't happen. The dark night was spent on a cross continental red-eye flight, where the extra inches of legroom in my lucky exit row seat didn't remediate my restless leg situation and the resultant sleeplessness. At least I got to walk through my all-time favorite part of the Chicago O'Hare airport at 4 am. The tunnel connecting the C and B terminals. It reminds me of my psychedelic childhood, during which my little legs walked through this tunnel many many times, bleary-eyed from our international flights, on our way home to the west coast to visit the aunties and my grandparents. Over the Atlantic and through the woods, to grandmother's house we go. This time, I literally laughed out loud with delirious happiness as I descended into its colorful depths. Lets just say I was very relieved to see my smiling husband and collapse into his arms after then waiting a couple of hours in a freezing, desolate waiting room for my 6:15 thrill-ride airport shuttle back to Champaign, (the tired driver swerved back and forth across the freeway multiple times in the course of our 4 hour drive), where he picked me up on campus, took me home and promptly plopped an exhausted me in bed.

Man, I'm wimpy. Where have my rock solid travel skills gone? I guess I'm rusty. Though, I would like to say in my defense that I was able to quickly and effectively navigate my way to an area of the large airport I'd never been, without so much as pausing to read a board or ask a question. My scanning eyes quickly caught all the signs and I was able to march straight there unaffected. I've still got that, at least. :)

when the 'mallows flaming, you stick it on the chocolate.

Triple Date Night:
hot dogs were roasted (no, not Colby and Moses. sorry, had to.), s'mores were aten, laughs were laughed, fire was lit and extinguished, and a good time was had by all...

wall flowers & a clown in a dog suit

Meet Palin.
She's a clown in a dog suit. She cracks me up. She's a 4-month-old Old English Sheepdog. (think The Little Mermaid). And she's adorable. While on our walk, I had a person stop in their car and roll down the window just to tell me so. She belongs to our wonderful friends, Luke and Marquette. The clown came to stay with us for a couple of days while they went to help at Girl's Camp this week. She is clumsy, goofy, fluffy, loving, and oh so cute.
This is pretty much how the days went:
  • Palin pesters Colby.
  • Colby gives in and wrestles with her for a while.
  • Palin gets too crazy and Colby nips her. She squeals and backs off.
  • Colby lays down again.
  • Repeat.
She makes our mellow Colby seem like an old fuddy-duddy gentleman with all of her puppy enthusiasm and energy. But really, his tail was wagging the whole time she was here, and they always had to be right next to each other. :)

And, I am very happy to report that some of our garden is still alive. The hosta plant bloomed and the gladiolas came out a pretty dark fuchsia color, and for some reason grew straight into the fence...maybe its trying to get some shade.

a list

1. Finished another semester. weeee! Only 1.5 semesters left of class. I learned so much in my motor speech class. I'm loving this field more and more. Its incredible how things are 'gelling' and making sense and coming together. Our professors/clinical supervisors promised this would happen and I laughed in their faces. Oops. Also, I get to do my clinic placement at a nursing home next semester. I am so looking forward to hanging out with elderly people- hearing their stories, eating applesauce and playing bingo. (well. i'll probably be actually working...but a girl can dream)

2. I love my dog. He is laying in the bay window sleeping and chasing something in his dream. His little paws are twitching like he is running. He is the cutest! Even though he eats cardboard rolls out of the trashcan and tries to steal bananas and bagels and anything else edible off of the kitchen counters when I'm not looking...Usually when I'm in the bathroom. He swallows it whole before I can pull my pants up to waddle out there and yell at him. But he makes up for it by laying his head on my lap when he wants to be snuggled, going on morning runs with us and making us laugh by chasing flies around the kitchen, and darting around the house wagging his tail, jumping into the air and 'smiling' so big at Jonny when plays fetch. He's doing great in his obedience class. For a small bribe, he will now sit, lay down, stay, come, watch me, leave it, and walk on a leash without pulling my arm out of the socket. (usually)

3. Its HOT here. But it makes me happy, because summer is still hanging around. Our friends who have been gone all summer for an internship came back yesterday because 'Fall semester' starts in a couple of weeks. I don't like that. I told them to leave because them coming back means summer is done. (ok, not really. I'm not that rude. but you better believe I was thinking it.) Now if I could only lay out by the pool during these last precious days. Somehow I can't bring myself to roll my flabby whiteness out there and scare away the children. Plus then I'd have to leave Colby in his cage at home and feel guilty. So sometimes I lay on our cement slab in the back yard and he can hang out with me and eat grass and lay in the mud because its cooler and then come lick my legs when they get sweaty. But I can't stand it very long because I start having mirages of giant blue pools of water and the crusty petunias and barely-blooming gladiolas stare back at me looking thirsty. And it makes me thirsty. So I give up and go inside to get Colby and me a drink, looking none the tanner.

4. Went to dinner at our fav little cheap/fast/delicious Mexican restaurant the other night. You know its good when the road in front is closed and undergoing the requisite summer construction and people drive around in circles and jump over medians just to get to their parking lot. Also. We saw INCEPTION. You know, the new Leo movie. It was incredible, just like everyone says. I don't usually like those mind-boggling types. But this was just weird enough to be interesting and just sane enough to be enjoyable. Go see it, if you haven't already. Also, its amazing how Leonardo's voice hasn't changed since he was like 15 in Titanic. He sounds exactly the same, I almost felt my seat rocking and smelt salt water. We also went to a bar last night, and drank Diet Coke, to celebrate one of Jonny's lab-mates passing his Qual. Its basically a room full of critics. You stand up and say what you know, and they try to stump you, and then call you stupid when they do. He passed! Hurray. That means he has 1 year to get his final Defense ready and then get his PhD, if the professor-gods decide to grant him that small honor after 8 years of backbreaking work. We had great conversations, it feels good to be social on occasion.

5. I got a job for the Fall semester! I get to lead a 'discussion section' for a Service Learning class where the undergrads go out to nursinghomes/hospitals/schools to do volunteer work and then they come back and report what they are learning and observing. They also read articles and write journals and papers. And I get to grade them. Its a real blessing that I don't have to resort to restaurant slavery again.

6. I'm thankful. I love our little home. I love sitting at the breakfast table early with Jonny: reading scriptures and listening to the windchime on our porch tinkling in the cool-ish morning breeze coming through the screen door and blowing our sheer curtain up and down, up and down. I love my husband. He is so thoughtful and is an example to me and works so hard. The best part of my day is seeing him show up at the door in the evening, sweaty from his bike ride home and smiling to see his favorite person (me)...even if I didn't have time to clean the house or even if I was too lazy to make dinner. I love the gospel. I am so thankful for the many aspects of church service and the knowledge I have of God's plan for his children and the peace it brings me, and the countless blessings He gives me every day. The new mormon.org is so cool. I love my family. I can't wait to fly to California in a week and a half to visit my sisters and my mom and see some friends! Time with loved ones always rejuvenates me, even if it leaves me with a twinge of nostalgia and regret.

Nauvoo the Beautiful

Spent a short weekend here.
The temple was incredible. The pageant was impressive. The camping was...not so much.
That's all for now.
