skookie

skillet + cookie= skookie
skookie + icecream= heaven

Also in our kitchen this week:
Cafe rio style pork, rice and dressing. yummo! The recipe makes huge servings, so we've been eating amazing leftovers all week long.

We did a little bit of this over the weekend:

(there may or may not have been some Pocahontas singing involved with the canoe.)

But honestly, it was a little surreal. It was my surprise date for Jonny on Friday night! At a little place called Crystal Lake park just a few minutes from our house you can rent boats for cheap. It was so beautiful and peaceful. The little 'lake' was like glass as we glided along the water and under green tree branches. My handsome paddler steered (is that the past-tense of steer? or is it store...or stire?) us around. We swept past a dock/boathouse where a party was going on in the early evening sun, and sounds of a fiddle, guitar and flute floated up into the cool summer air. Cicadas hummed in the trees and people fished on the banks. I almost heard Sebastian singing "kiss de girl"...almost (but Jonny wouldn't let us get a rowboat, so no luck there). Or maybe I saw Tom Sawyer on a raft wearing cutoff overalls?

After a picnic in the park, we headed to an outdoor concert...there were hundreds of people out there on their lawn chairs and blankets, laughing and eating and boogie-ing to the southern-Louisiana-style music of Nathan Williams and the Zydeco Cha-Chas.

More proof that we are still having fun this hot, sticky summer amidst grad school craziness:
