"The mountains are calling and I must go."- John Muir
A spontaneous weekend trip to Stanley, Idaho- to explore the Sawtooth mountains with our little guy. There were lakes and rivers, streams and trees and a large herd of sheep in the grassy meadow. The mountain night boasted starry skies and crisp air and a very little bit of sleep. Hot cocoa and a crackling fire in our yurt welcomed the first light of dawn and we snuggled in sleeping bags. Our trusty Subaru carried us over narrow dirt roads, we wandered through a local arts festival and split a corn dog and an ice cream sandwich in the hot sun. We browsed the local history in a forest-ranger-homestead turned museum. We sat on a driftwood log, our toes next to the lapping water of a deep blue lake and shared a book while the babe slept in my arms. Then, out of sheer exhaustion and desperation we drove home in the middle of the night to our own soft beds and a warm crib for Everett. Even though there was no waterskiing, rafting, mountain biking or other such thrills, the striking scenery and the fresh open road were satisfying to my soul. A nice first effort for 'camping'. I sense more adventures to come with our youngling. There is so much beauty in our world to share with him.
